Five Democrat senators have threatened the Supreme Court with the following warning:
“The Supreme Court is not well. And the people know it . . . . Perhaps the Court can heal itself before the public demands it be ‘restructured’ in order to reduce the influence of politics.'”
To Senators Whitehouse, D-R.I., Blumenthal, D-Conn., Hirono, D-Hawaii, Durbin, D-Ill., and Gillibrand, D-N.Y., I would like to ask, What kind of ‘healing’ you have in mind?’ Healing implies an illness. What illness is suffered by the nine Justices of the Supreme Court?
The diagnosis of an illness also implies a doctor, a recognized physician with training adequate to the task of healing. But, of course, the Senators while posing a diagnosis do not offer to help, like a true physician would; instead, you make healing into a demand and a threat by insisting the Court “heal itself.”
The Senators demand ‘healing’ from the nine Justices ‘or else’ as the saying goes.
Since it’s obvious the Senators are concerned with some form of moral and political illness rather than physical, one wonders about their choice of words. Why is a political disagreement expressed in medicinal terms?
I think I know the answer: The demand that the Court ‘heal itself’ sounds high-minded and beyond reproach, an opinion uttered by moral superiors whose authority cannot be challenged.
This demand to “heal itself” is a form of self-righteous condescension that should be, but will not be, an embarrassment to other Democrat Senators. It’s tantamount to telling the Justices they must conform to Democrat demands ‘for their own good.’
What do the Democrats have in mind? Adding more Justices to the Supreme Court, all arch-liberal. Justice Ruth Bader Ginzberg, liberal icon and film star, has gone the record with NPR saying, “Nine seems to be a good number.”
What incited the five Democrat Senators to action is fear the Court will rule on the side of a group allied with National Rifle Association against New York City which would prohibit other cities and states from adding more restrictions on gun ownership.
They complain of “industrial-strength influence campaign” to influence the Court in favor of the NRA’s position. So what do the Democrats do in response: They threaten to destroy a nine-justice Supreme Court and replace it with enough new justices to ensure a liberal majority for generations to come.
In other words, if the Democrats are ‘losing’ the game playing by rule, they will simply change the rules so they can win.
That the five Senators in question publicly express such a threat is appalling. It stands side-by-side by the threat to remove the Electoral College and replace with the popular voice. Anything is licit that insures Democrats have the power.
What is most repulsive of all is that these Senators think they deserve the power because of their superior moral standing compared to conservatives and Republicans. (The dividing line, of course, being abortion.)
I think Republican Senator Lindsay Graham said it best when he told the Democrats trying to destroy Brett Kavanaugh, “Boy, you all want power. God, I hope you never get it.”
Dear Dr. Hudson: I think you mean “heel” rather than “heal,” don’t you?–as in the command given to a dog to walk at his master’s heel. There is a connotation there, hmm?— at this “command” to the Supreme Court by its supposed “masters!” It appears that some branches of government are more equal than others.
