College is setting kids up for unhappiness because it is setting them up for loneliness. We seem to fear that a firm belief in morality cannot coexist with a firm belief in love. Did we miss the fact that the simple St. Francis, who called the birds his sisters, was the same St. Francis who flung himself into a thorny bush in response to a lustful thought? Or perhaps we missed the entire New Testament.

But either you believe in the concept and duty of modesty or you don’t. Now I get and respect the arguments for rejecting modesty. I get the argument that a woman isn’t responsible for a man’s thoughts, though this doesn’t really hold up when you believe that you are your brother’s keeper.

It’s years of Sex in the City that led women to Fifty Shades of Grey. It’s the natural progression of the subject matter. We have to recognize it and protest sooner. I’m not saying we become prudes. I’m not saying we can’t watch any movies that portray sexual sin. Sin can be portrayed in an artistic or even irrelevant way that is not pornographic.

I have struggled with various chronic health issues for many years. I’ve tried all sorts of lifestyle changes and dietary changes and natural healing methods– many of them rather extreme and difficult– and while I’ve seen improvement in some areas, some of my issues continue despite anything I do. I don’t think Boyhood is trash. But I think it has a very specific message and agenda. Many have claimed its message and agenda are a warning against Mason’s childhood. I would like to think this is the case.

I understand that pine needles are a hassle and when you’re making resolutions it’s nice to have a cleaned up house. But I think that often there’s something more there. I think that often there’s a deeper reason why everybody is so desperate to ditch the season.
