When the Mass ritual is as much a part of the daily routine as dinner and bedtime rituals, children are more likely to expect and embrace it. Our toddler asks us every day what time we’re going to Mass. Does that mean he would rather go to Mass than go to the playground? Probably not. But he does look forward to it every day.

We train our children and ourselves how to seek God. It matters what toy the toddler plays with— it actually matters what it’s made out of and what it looks like! It matters what music the toddler listens to. It matters what plates we eat off of. It matters whether or not our children learn to appreciate beauty.

We also ought to celebrate the spookiness. I don’t mean that we ought to even slightly engage in anything that borders on evil. Those haunted houses aged 18 and up are out of the question, as are horror movies meant to horrify, scenes of torture, occult practices, etc. But there is a playfulness to the dancing skeleton that I believe is healthy and good and Christian.

In the end, we can have all the homilies and articles and pamphlets explaining the benefits of chastity, but we are failing the flock if we don’t have better explanations regarding the process of reconciliation and returning to chastity. People need to know the uncomfortable details. They need to be told, “if you commit a sexual sin, here’s how you confess it.”

Most people would be appalled if Christmas was suddenly shifted to the nearest Sunday instead of having a whole day to itself. Either these Holy Days matter or they don’t. If they matter we have to start acting like it and if they don’t matter then we should stop calling them an obligation.
